Every year, the winter shopping season starts earlier and earlier. Commonly, people tend to buy holiday gifts on Black Friday or Cyber Monday but this year Amazon predicts that people will start to buy them in October! It’s a bit of a shock considering it’s a season for jack-o-lanterns and trick-or-treating, but it’s supported by the data:
“According to a 2021 Amazon Advertising/Kantar survey, 39% of U.S. consumers and 42% of U.K. consumers will start holiday shopping as early as October. Even though Black Friday and Cyber Monday are popular times to find deals on televisions, laptops, and the latest gadgets, 47% of U.S. consumer electronics shoppers and 45% of U.K. consumer electronics shoppers plan to make holiday purchases in October. It’s a similar story for fashion and consumer packaged goods. Forty-six percent of U.S. and 47% of U.K. consumers reported they will start buying clothing and accessory gifts in October, and 42% of U.S. and 51% of U.K. consumers reported they will start shopping for beauty, pet, and baby gifts”.
When it comes to phrases searched in search engines, in 2020, searches for “Christmas gifts” in the U.S. doubled from 40.5K in September to 110K in October. The difference was even greater between October and November when online searches rose to 450K and in December it reached 550K. The largest increase among 818 holiday-related search terms happened between October and November. It jumped from 711K to 2.9 million. It was clearly the time customers searched for more gift ideas and offers.
According to Amazon’s 2020 data, online holiday shopping hit $185.88 billion. This year, it’s expected to reach $206.88 billion – 65% of U.K. consumers and 64% of U.S. consumers plan to do at least 40% of their holiday shopping online this year. It turns out that both offline shopping and online shopping are extremely dynamic and can support each other. In stores, customers can try out products: they can touch them and examine their details or they can ask sales associates questions. In the case of online shopping, brands are trying their best to provide customers with similar experiences. They offer customer service, chatbots, close-up photos of products, videos with all of the information or various surveys to help in choosing the most appropriate product.
